Winter

Winter Solstice Cauldron: FestiviTea

Winter Solstice Cauldron: FestiviTea

  • Ages and length: Grades K–3 · 60 minutes
  • Price: $200 per class, plus $4 per student for take-home makes
  • Max participants: One classroom (up to 25 students)

Celebrate the longest night by mixing Solstice FestiviTea, a cheerful winter blend of dried apple, rose hips, chamomile, cinnamon, and cranberries. Nothing is tasted at school: each child blends a jar to steep at home with a grown-up.

One make per session: Solstice FestiviTea.

What we make and do

  • Herb Highlight: Rose Hips: round red fruits that grow on rose bushes after the petals fall. Look closely and feel how hard and wrinkly the dried hips are. Long ago, people called them little lanterns left by the roses to guide travelers through winter’s darkness, and they are packed with vitamin C
  • Mash the Rose Hips: crush them with a mortar and pestle (seeds and hairs already removed)
  • Sniff and Blend: add dried apple, chamomile, cinnamon, and cranberries to your jar, sniff each one, and shake
  • Take It Home: your FestiviTea jar with a recipe card to steep with a grown-up

Jar of Bath Snow with separate bowls of coconut milk powder, oats, marshmallow root, and arrowroot starch

Winter’s Wildflower Spa: Bath Snow

  • Ages and length: Grades K–3 · 60 minutes
  • Price: $200 per class, plus $4 per student for take-home makes
  • Max participants: One classroom (up to 25 students)

Make Bath Snow, a plant-based bath powder that turns bath water into a creamy, cloud-like swirl. Our herb highlight is marshmallow root, a soothing root that turns silky and slippery in water.

One make per session: Bath Snow.

What we make and do

  • Herb Highlight: Marshmallow Root: a root that grows in soft, marshy ground, dug in autumn and dried for winter. Feel the dry powder, then add a few drops of water and feel it turn smooth and slippery (herbalists call this goo mucilage). Fun fact: the very first marshmallows were made from this root, over 4,000 years ago in Ancient Egypt
  • Make the Snow: watch castile soap turn into “freshly fallen snow,” then add oat flour and coconut milk powder
  • Scoop and Shake: add marshmallow root and arrowroot powders to your jar, screw on the lid, and shake
  • Take It Home: with a how-to card: about 1 cup in the tub as it fills, with a grown-up
